📚Reading📚

NIWA - National Institute of cold water and Atmospheric research
Artificially -  Faking it
Atmospheric - Relating to the atmosphere of the earth
High-resolution - Large amount of detail
Examined by scientists - Scientist look at something and start to study it
Submersible - Like a submarine but smaller
Enabled - You have power over that thing
Seabed -  The bottom of the ocean
  • How do the scientists study the reef? They have to go to the water
  • and get the corals by using a fishermen net or submersible then have a look at it then study it.
  •  What are they trying to show or figure out? They are trying to figure out if
  • the corals would die or live when they put it in acid.
  • Why are the NZ scientists testing in an "artificially acidified sea water" - what
  • does this mean? They were trying to figure out what would happen to the corals,
  • and what will show how different species cope with changing conditions.
  • Why does Australia have tropical coral and NZ have cold-water coral? Australia has
  • tropical water because they are closer to the equator and NZ is further away from the equator.
  • Where does NZ cold-water coral grow? It is found in the seabed in the deep ocean.
  • How far down? It is around 1 kilometre deep.
  • Why can't NZ have tropical coral? Because the water is not warm enough.
  • How do scientists get the cold water coral so they can study it? They go to the
  • bottom of the ocean by using the submersible
  • Make a DLO showing 'before and after' type photos of coral reefs. Make a screencast
  • and explain how coral reefs are damaged using your own words.

🐠🐟The Great Barrier Reef🐟🐠

Occurs - Happens

Explain How/Why corals go white:
They expel their symbiotic algae living in their tissues, causing them to turn completely white.

Explain what PH scale is:
This is a PH scale. A PH scale is something people use to tell what is deadly
and what is not deadly. The most deadly things are on 0 and 14 but the most
not deadly thing is on 7 such as blood and water
What You Should Know About the pH Scalet

Explain how acidification kills coral and sea life:
The climate change makes the water warmer and the zooxanthellae leaves the
Coral and the coral dies.

Explain what layers of the ocean is:
This is the layers of the ocean.  The sunlight is the top of the ocean and that is
where the corals are. The bottom of the ocean is called Trenches zone and that
is where the sea creatures like planktons live.

Here is a photo of planktons in the dark and the layers of the ocean
Plankton: small organisms of big importance - Sanja Zamuda ... Layers of the Ocean - Deep Sea Creatures on Sea and Sky

Explain what would happen is plankton died:
If the planktons died then the sea creatures such as baleen whales would die
because there is no other food to eat.

🛠TECHNOLOGY🛠

Today my blog post is about what we did for technology.
So this week we swapped groups, The group that I was in last week was Control and Now I am in Hard Materials. So when we change classes we stay with the same people. First we had to join a hangout call so we could see our teacher but it was a bit confusing because there was two different hangout calls and we didn't know which one was the right one until we saw Mr Grundy on one of those calls.
For hard materials the first thing we had to do was watch a video about what we are going to do when we get to go to TC (Tamaki Collage). The next thing we did was, we had to go onto the site and click on a link that brought us to what we have to do before we make what we wanted to make. So for example We had to write about four people that we wanted to make a necklace or something for. The four people I chose was My Mum, My Dad, My older sister and Myself. after we wrote who we are doing all this for we had to write down four things that they love to do or they do. for example for myself I said that I love playing sports, I love sleeping, I love eating and I love to watch youtube. after we write those things down we add pictures that relate to those words. Later on we had to finish the call because it was nearly time for morning tea.

BUBBLE ART

Today my blog is about what we did on Tuesday. So on Tuesday Miss Ashley wanted us to do a relaxing and calm art that was not that hard to do so she chose to do bubbles. While we were drawing the bubbles there was music playing in the background.

⏲Telling The Time⏲

Today my blog is about the maths that Room 8 did on Thursday. The maths was about learning how to tell the time. So for example when the short hand is near the 2 and the long hand is on the 6 the time will be 2:30 because the short hand is the hour hand and the long hand is the minute hand.

Underground soldiers page 36 and 37

New words:
  • Sleet - Rain containing ice
  • Stalemate - a draw, a tie, two teams are even, nobody is winning
  • Canadian - soldiers from Canada
  • German-held territory -
  • Boobytraps -
  • Landmine -

My summary:

Hope - By early 1917 there were three massive piles of explosives. British and Canadian
moved in. There was an enormous explosion and the german people got caught. But then
later on the Germans fought back and the wounded  British and Canadian were carried back
down. Without the underground cave system many more would have died from the war. By
1918 the German troops left behind some boobytraps but then the tunnellers found them and
blew them up carefully.  The tunneling company returned to Auckland in 1919. Now Arras has
special visitors and has a lift that takes you to the underground museum. They also have a memorial
for the NZ tunnellers that died.
