Microscope Experience

This is what we did in week 6 which is when Thiery came for the second time and while some students saw the things the other students had to write about what they have already learnt.

Cloning and De -extinction

DNA is the building block of all life, if you unravel a human DNA it can reach to the sun and back 300 times and human 100 trillion chromosomes and 23 sets of sells, 23 from the mum and 23 from the dad which altogether is 46 sells.

What is cloning?

Cloning is when you take DNA from a living thing and make an embryo and implant the embryo into a surrogate mother and it makes a baby. because  they want to find out if they can make more animals and try and play God just to see if it would work. They can use this technology to save threatened or endangered animals. There are some animals that have been cloned like a sheep called Dolly and she was born in 1996 in scotland and died in 2003 and it lived for 6.5 years and OX that has lived for only 2 weeks there is also a Goat that was in China and a horse that was born in 2003.

What is de-extinction?

De-extinction is when you bring an animal that is already dead back to life. Some bad reasons to bring a dead animal back to life is because it is way to expensive because if you pay for it and waste all your money and the de-extinction doesn’t work then you wasted all your money for no reason and also people should start to think about saving the animals that are threatened and almost dying then trying to save an animal that is already dead.

CAUSE AND EFFECT

This is cause and effect where we had to read a text and say what caused the bad thing to happen and what effected them at the end of it.

BENNY

Yesterday Rm 8 did reading and it was about two boys that were best friends and they had a good friendship until they left to college they were separated.

ATHLETICS

Last Friday on week 5 Tamaki primary had their athletics, The houses were Tripoli(Blue), Tobruk(Red), Benghazi(Green and Alamaine(Yellow). The first thing we did we did was there was some students that had to help set the gazebos for all four houses and the seniors from each house had to decorate their own gazebo and then while some seniors did the decorations some other seniors had to help the juniors with their face paint. When the bell rang everyone had to go to class and teachers had to write on everyone's hand what their age was because that is what we were doing our races/events in. Then everyone had to sit on the dots but with their house and the principle had a talk with us before we started the day. After the talk one house at a time had to walk around the track singing their chants and then sit underneath their gazebo quietly waiting for the teachers. Once everyone sat down the principle told Alamaine to stand in front of the other houses and sing their chants, next up was Benghazi and Tripoli and finally Tobruk then after the chants the principle chose which house had the best chant and which house was the best dressed which was Benghazi and Tobruk, after the chants was the field events the field events were Shot put, Standing jump, Discus, Long jump and High jump, that was the order of the 12/13 year old students. The students that placed 1st 2nd and 3rd in each field event, Shot put - boys - 1st/Timote, 2nd/Paula and 3rd was Kordell, Standing jump - boys - 1st/Kordell, 2nd/Havea and 3rd was Eh htoo wah, Girls - 1st/Hope, 2nd/Falakika and 3rd was Chanel then for Discus - boys - 1st/Paula, 2nd/Kordell and 3rd was Raymond next was Long jump Boys - 1st/Paula, 2nd/Auckland and 3rd was Sunny, Girls - 1st/Channel, 2nd/Courtney and 3rd was Hope. Finally High jump boys - 1st/Paula, 2nd/Auckland and 3rd was Kordell. After the field events it was morning tea.

  1. Write everything you know about Hitler, Jewish people and WW2 in your own words.
First Hitler was a very bad person from germany. He Killed lots of innocent people like jewish people. In world war 2 he killed lots of france people and ruled over it.

  2. Create a profile of The White Mouse using Google Drawings. Include her picture, birth and death date, details about her ashes, and a paragraph about why she is famous.

  3. Make a timeline of how WW2 started - include dates, locations, maps etc.

  4. On a map, find Normandy. Make a connection to other places in France you have learnt about before/heard of before and write 1-2 sentences of what you know about each one.

  5. Explain the role radios played in the resistance. (what they did, who had them, how did they work?)

  6. There are other famous female heroes who helped downed airmen escape, by helping them over the mountains to Spain. Research this using Google, use a map/images to help you understand how dangerous this journey really was.

  7. How much is five million francs? (in the 1940’s).

  8. Explain what D-Day is. D-Day means an important war or a massive invasion.
D-day was a huge invasion in Normandy France on June 6, 1944, where american soldiers and other allied soldiers fought to end World War 2.

  9. How did The White Mouse help the Allies win the war? She helped them by exploding trains with German soldiers and by killing multiple germans with her bare hands.

  10. Research the medals people could earn in WW2 (especially NZ soldiers). What did you have to do to get each one?  First is the medal of honour, to get this medal you have to risk your life. 2nd is the Atlantis star, You have to earn the star of honour for 6 months. 3rd is the Air crew star, You have to serve the air crew for four months. 4rth is the Arctic star, you have to serve in the north arctic circle. 5th is the Africa star was awarded for a minimum of one day's service in an operational area of North Africa between 10 June 1940 and 12 May 1943.

😁Camp Raglan😁

Last term we had camp and it was at Raglan. There were about more than 30 students that went to camp and some stayed at school or were at home. We had like a 2 hour drive to the camp, the driver's name was Mike and the person that was sitting next to me was Senitila. I was excited because I was gonna be with my friends for four whole days but also at the same time I was nervous because I was gonna be away from home. When we finally arrived at camp the first thing I wanted to do was lay down on my bed and go to sleep, But all of the students had to first put our stuff in the gym/hall and had a meeting in the hall about the rules, the people working there was Jenny and Tony and they told us what to do and what not to do. There were three signs one said GO which means that anyone could go to that specific place, The other one said WAIT! Which means that we had to ask a Guardian or a teacher to come withs us to that place and the last one said NO GO which meant that no one could go/touch that thing/place. Then everyone grabbed their stuff and set up their room/bed. The girls that were in the dorm with me were Syraiah-Lee and Ahi. Then after that we could just go and play anywhere with anyone, some kids went to the park where it has four sets of swings, a Lullaby which rocks from side to side, there was also a trampoline for the boys side and on the girls side and there was also this long slide but not that much kids went on it. Some kids were also at the gym and in the gym there were two basketball hoops and a rock climbing wall, All the balls were inside this thing that people could sit on but you could also open it during our free time I was playing manhunt with some of the boys and syraiah. Later on during the afternoon everyone (Students and teachers/Guardians) went to the beach. There was only a few students that made it to the beach before everyone else and they already went into the water but no teachers were there so the students just wanted to do their own thing and have a swim but that wasn’t the plan, The teachers wanted to just play a game on the beach like either volleyball or touch or just pay with the sand but everyone just jumped into the water and the teachers were really mad because the students never listened. So we came back up and had dinner. I think we had Burgers I can’t remember. Then we played some games for a bit then after the games we had a movie night the movie we watched was Avengers Infinity war not that much kids were watching so the teachers stopped the movie and everyone had to go to bed around 11:30 but there were some girls that stayed up and decided to pierce their nose and ears but they got caught from the teachers and were about to go home but they got given one more chance.

On Tuesday there was some kids that woke up way to early in the morning and woke nearly everyone up but they stayed in their rooms until everyone else woke up which ws like about 7:00 we woke up and did what we had to do then we had breakfast for breakfast most of us were eating cornflakes and some had other food then after breakfast we got sorted into our groups of three with 16 or 15 students in each group and the first thing we did was we had a talk of what we were going to do. We had a rotation of three different activities they were Kayaking, Orienteering and sports, I was in miss Ashley group with Syraiah lee, Senitila, Lily u, Auckland, Davlyn, Railey, Eh too wah, Rosie, Isi, Summuree, Randolph (Teacher), Hemi Isaiah, Joshua and leon. The first thing we did was orientation for that we had to hold two pieces of paper, one had a map and the other one had the questions, there were about 15 or more questions we had to walk around the whole camp. The winner was the person that had the most answers that were right. It was so close because it was between Me and my group and Auckland and his group but the group that won was my group because we had 16 points and the other group had 15 so me and my friends got the chocolate. After the orientation Miss Ashley’s group went to kayaking in Kayaking the thing that I loved was the rafting where we had to hold onto each other's kayak and two people would walk on top of our kayak and switch places while we kept them out of the water but there were some kids that fell into the water. After the Kayaking our group got to go into the pool which we thought was small but actually it was kind of deep on one side and shallow on the other side. We stayed in the pool for a while but then we had to leave and get ready for lunch and for lunch we had macaroni and cheese. After lunch our group went to do rock climbing. Rock climbing was really hard; There were only two easy ones that I could make it to the top after rock climbing. We had free time during that time some kids went into the gym and some in the park. Me and syraiah went into the gym and there were also some other kids there playing sports. Me and syraiah was playing basketball with some of the boys it was fun. Later on that night we sang Happy Birthday to Lily and then some kids went on a night walk and some kids just stayed in the hall and played games. The night walk was kind of scary and nice because lots of people were screaming and scaring each other and we kept tripping over some sticks and stepping on mud then when we came back to camp I went to go wash the mud off my shoes and then we all went to sleep.

On wednesday We woke up around 7:00/7:30 and did our things then had breakfast and started our day. The thing that we were doing was paddle boarding but for that we had to stand up or just kneel down on our knees if we were too scared to stand up. The two men that were teaching us were Steve and Dave; they also taught us how to kayak. After the paddle boarding our group went to the lookout it was beautiful but our group got smaller and changed into four groups of twelve so some of the kids in our group left to another group after the lookout we went to the pool again and then left the pool to the slide I only went down the slide like about 2 or 3 times it was fun but the thing i didn’t like was the cow poop that was all over the grass it was Disgusting ughhhhh. Then we left the slide to get ready for lunch . I think we had nachos and mince and bread. It was delicious. After lunch we had free time as always then we had to practise an item for our show that we were going to have on Thursday night. In that time me and some other years 8 students were just playing basketball because we didn’t know what to do but then Miss ashley caught us not practising so she told us to practise something so me and syraiah wanted to do a tik tok with some yr 8 boys and one yr7 the boy we were practising a mariah carey song that's called fantasy then later on that night we had dinner which was I think butter chicken, Later on there was a fight that happened between to boys but I don’t actually know what started the fight because I was walking around outside but then when I came back one boy looked angry and there was a group of boys walking with him and the other boy was either in the hall or in his dorm that fight affected a lot of kids first it affected the boys because three boys had to go home and two of those boys was really close to lots of students and both of their friends were crying and then somehow it affected the girls well the girls were crying for different reasons and it nearly went all night but the girls finally went to sleep because we were all on lockdown for the night and we couldn’t leave our dorm.

On Thursday it was raining in the morning so we couldn’t go on a walk to the beach, the first thing that happened after breakfast was that everyone had to go straight to the hall and the teachers were just talking about what had happened on wednesday night and they said that there were three boys going home, and Miss Ashley was talking about how the sadness went from the boys side to the girls side and it just ruined the night. But after that we had free time again because we couldn’t go outside cause it was raining and it was too foggy and way too cold to even open the windows. While waiting for lunch to happen we started playing games the first game we played was where boys on one side and girls on the other, everyone had to grab a partner from their side and sit across from each other with their legs out then the teacher would call out a number from 1-10 and the two students that were given that number had to run over everyone else's legs and then go around and sit back at your place. After that game we played another game called have you ever it's where we had to grab some chairs and sit in a circle and there would be one person in the middle asking a question and whoever has done it before in their whole life had to move out of their chair and sit somewhere else and the last person to sit down has to ask the question, That game was kind of fun but some people were just trying to be funny but really wasn’t. After all the games we had to practise for the show because it was in 5 hours but at the last hour our group split up and the boys went to another group and me and Syraiah just had to find something to do. Finally we had the show and the first group to go up was me and Syraiah-lee,Stanley and Litia but we didn’t know what to do so I just did a magic trick and that was probably the only one I knew how to do. The group after our group was a big group that sang a song, the next group was Mariah and Giamarni they were performing a dance and everyone was hyping them up. It was fun. The next group I think was Summuree and Liane, they also performed a dance. It was good. The other group were a group of boys trying spicy food to see who could handle it

And not have to drink milk it was impressive how long some boys didn’t seem like it was hot but for some it was really hot and they kept moving around the stage and sucking their hands/cloths, And the next person was Mariah she also performed a magic trick then after her it was Nitika doing a cook island dance it was nice, After Nitika finished the teachers asked if anyone else wanted to perform something and then the boys said that they wanted to do the tik tok with me and Syraiah but we didn’t know that they were gonna do it but we went anyways cause we knew the dance and we were the last group that went then the teachers told us who the winner was. First place was Giamarni and Mariah Second Place was Eh htoo wah and Third place was Nitika. After that we went into our dorms and in the girls dorms we had a party because it was the last day and we wanted to have our last night at camp to be great and it was great because I also found out i'm an auntie so that made me feel even more happy and we fell asleep around 11:30.

On the last day of camp Friday everyone woke up did their things and had to just pack their things nicely and some kids that have already finished packing had to help set for breakfast and those kids that set up for breakfast didn’t have to help clean up after. So for breakfast we had the same thing, after breakfast everyone had to finish packing and also clean up their room vacuuming the room, pick up rubbish and empty rubbish bins after we all cleaned up we had to move our bags to the hall and the teachers had some clothes on the floor from outside girls and boys clothes and the teachers held up all the clothes and the students that owned it had to grab it. Then after that every teacher and helper said what they liked and what they didn’t like and I think that everything the teachers said was true because it was. And after that we had our last lunch at camp then after lunch we said thank you to the managers and then took a couple photos then loaded the bus and went back to school. The bus ride was great. We had a toilet stop after 1 hour at the gas station and then got back on the road. The thing I liked the most from camp was probably whenever I got to know the other students more and hang out with them more it was really fun and the activities were amazing the one thing I didn’t like was always healing students talk back to teachers/disrespecting the teachers and adults that organized the camp for us and the one night where there was heaps of tears and sadness but for me I really loved camp and I want to go back.

India and Greek

Q: (What is the main difference between india and greek foods?)

A: India uses spice almost every time and in Greece they use herbs for their flavour

Q: (Why would the southern parts of India be noted for making fish dishes?)

A: Because they are closer to the biggest ocean in the world the pacific ocean. Also they are a part of more than 3 of the most other biggest oceans. They are the United States, the United states, Atlantic and indian.

Q: (Why would many herbs grow wild in the greek mountains during spring?)

A: In the mountain it's steep and people don’t walk in that bit so when that bit is not disturbed it and plus the temperature is good for the herbs.

Q: (Why does olive oil hold the flavors together)

A: It would hold and observe the herbs together.

Q: (Main points and bigger idea why are some breads used for mopping up a meal?)

A: Because it helps you finish your food faster and its even good by itself

Q: (How would you describe the pastry used to make spanakopita?)

A:Its thick crust on the top and bottom but not side and crispy

Q: (Do you prefer foods that are flavoured with spices or those that are flavoured with herbs?)

A:Some people prefer spicy and some prefer herbs

Kelp Forest

 Q.Where do kelp plants live?

A.Shallow cool water

Q.How could the relationship between kelp, sea otters and sea urchins be described?

A.Sea otters feed on sea urchins and sea urchins feed on kelp

Q.Which part of the kelp plant is similar to a tree trunk?

A.Stipe

Q.When the sea otter populations increased, why did the sea urchin populations decrease?

A.Because the otters were protected so then there were more sea otters that feed on sea urchins that's why their population decreased

Q.How could pollution destroy kelp forest?

A.The water would get warmer and the kelp needs cold water, If the water is filled with rubbish and sediment the kelp can’t get the sunlight that it needs to grow.

Q. Look at the photograph on page 6, Why do you think the top layer of kelp is called the canopy?

A.Because its blocking the sunlight from going in the water.

Q.what do you think should be done to help protect kelp forest?

A.Stop littering in the water and stop polluting.

Zebrafish explanation

 Zebrafish text: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1AfZGT3Fw8xj7Mh_A0OxjRzK_qOIYHrko/view

New words: .

  • Anatomy- study of the body.

  • Post-fertilization  - after the boy part and girl part come together to make a baby (when the cells combine)

  • Himalayas - mountain range that separates China and India

  • Embryo - a group of cells that turn into a baby or egg

  • Genetic - relating to your DNA

  • Himalayas - A country that has a lot of Mountains

  • Ganges  - a long river in India

  • Organs - body parts

  • Juvenile - child/teenager

  •   Sections - slices

  • Stained with dyes - putting different coloured liquids onto it so you can see different parts

  • Coronal -  cutting in half vertically E.g. separating the front and the back

  • Transverse -   cutting in half horizontally, E.g. cutting the head off the body

  •  Sagittal - cutting in half  vertically - E.g. cutting the left side away from the right side

Hope -  Zebrafish is transparent and they live in Ganges river in the wild, in India where they have fresh water. Scientists study the zebrafish because they are transparent so the scientists see inside it. Zebrafish is 2.5cm to 4cm long, Embryo is the egg of the zebrafish and has three layers which are single cell, yolk and chorion. After the scientists breed about a hundred or thousands of zebrafish they kill them and look at them under a microscope to study them. It takes 2 to 3 days for an egg to hatch, the zebrafish lifespan is 2 to 7 years.

These are different kinds of cuts.

  • Coronal -  cutting in half vertically E.g. separating the front and the back

  • Transverse -   cutting in half horizontally, E.g. cutting the head off the body

  •  Sagittal - cutting in half  vertically - E.g. cutting the left side away from the right side.

Scientists kill the zebrafish at different ages(hour/days post fertilization). Scientists take photos of the different stages of how the organs grow. They use different kinds of dye to see different kinds of body parts and they take pictures of it to see the difference between zebrafish.
